The first step in starting your VA business is determining what interests you and what you’re good at. Is one of those areas social media? If you answered yes, then you’ll be happy to hear that there are many VA’s who solely focus their business on social media management. Whether you’re a small business owner wanting to hire a social media VA or you’re a VA who wants to focus on a specific niche like social media, today’s post is for you. I’m sharing a roundup of 20 social media virtual assistant services.

A social media VA is someone who oversees one or more social media accounts for a business or brand. Social media plays a big part in today’s online marketing strategy. Therefore, social media managers are helpful to maintain a brand’s online presence and provide a variety of social media tasks.

According to an article on PR Newswire, more than half of small businesses in the U.S. engage on social media at least weekly, with Facebook being the most popular platform used. Despite the ongoing pandemic crisis, many companies reported that their revenue continued to increase in 2021. Because these companies focused on digital marketing strategy and a social media presence, they were still able to connect with their audience and create a buying experience for their customers.

Because of the shift the pandemic created, more and more businesses want to create an online presence. A social media VA can analyze which platforms would be best to use for a certain business. Not all social media accounts are suitable for every business, and really not necessary. From there, they can set the social media channels up for that particular business.

Each business social media account should have a brand pillars. These are 3-5 topics related to their niche that they can rotate to talk about, promote, discuss etc. on their social accounts. Competitor investigation is not so that you can copy what your client’s competitors are doing. It’s to see how they’re using their platforms and find ways that you can improve your client’s practices on social media. It’s finding ways to better serve your client’s audience, so they can be the front runner in the industry.

Content Creation

As a social media manager, you can give your clients ideas on what types of content to post on their social media platform or platforms, using the company’s brand pillars. You can use a social media content planner to list what you’re going to post each day. I love using Google calendar as an easy way to share content schedules and topics with my clients.

Another reason why many businesses decided to hire a virtual social media assistant is to help with graphic creation. Graphics are utilized in a variety of ways on and off social media. With social media, you can create graphics for a social media post picture, story highlight covers, collages and story images to name a few. We love using Canva to create custom graphics for our clients. It’s super user-friendly and cost effective.

Hashtag and Keyword Research

One of the easiest, most efficient ways for social posts to be found organically is to use keyword-rich text coupled with relevant hashtags. There are different ways you can do this on each social media platform. For YouTube, TubeBuddy is a helpful optimization tool. For Pinterest, simply type in a word relevant to a client’s business and multiple other potential keywords will pop up. If you hit “enter,” then you’ll see actual keywords people are using on Pinterest at the top of the page. Those are keywords to use in future posts.

For hashtags on Instagram, you can type in a potential hashtag that you’re wanting to use and a list of other related hashtags will be listed underneath. You want a good mix of hashtags that have a small, medium and large usage rate. If you use all hashtags that have been used millions of times, the chances of your post being seen are slim.

Write Social Posts

After doing some hashtag and keyword research, you can then write social media posts for your clients. Referring back to the goals of a social media account, you want to be sure what you’re writing correlates with those goals. As a social media expert, it’s your job to know and understand your client’s voice too.

Schedule Social Posts

A great way to be efficient with your work is to batch it. We’re big fans of that process at The Virtual Assistant Studio, and talked about how and why we do that HERE. For scheduling social posts, we use a couple different platforms to make scheduling posts easy. For Pinterest, we love using Tailwind. When scheduling Instagram and Facebook, we use Planoly.

Community Engagement

Building a loyal following on social media takes work. In order for followers/users to engage with your content, you have to engage back with them. As a social media manager, you can do this on behalf of your client. Things like liking comments, responding to comments and direct messages and asking questions in Facebook groups are all excellent ways to engage.

Monitor Social Media Conversations

On top of engaging with followers, you also might have to monitor social media conversations. Unfortunately, there are some not-so-nice people that can be lurking on social platforms. It’s your job to make sure everyone is playing nice.

If you’re having to manage multiple accounts with multiple clients, there are programs that allow you to see comments, likes, messages etc. from one dashboard. Some programs include Hootsuite, SocialPilot and TweetDeck (just for Twitter). These programs are also helpful when responding to followers, and you don’t have to login to multiple accounts throughout the day.

Manage Brand Relationships

You might have seen brands partner together to promote a product on social media. But behind that promotion, takes a lot of work and planning. Social media managers can choose to assist in this process. If your client is an influencer and is partnering with a brand to promote a product, you can assist with making sure all tactics are finished and completed by a certain deadline.

Analyze Analytics

It’s your goal to be able to show your clients the positive changes you’re bringing to the table. And an easy way to do that is through data. You should make it a priority to pull analytic reports for each account you manage on a monthly basis and go over it with your client to show your progress. Sometimes it takes a few months to see real change, so be patient and assure your clients that.

Social Media Marketing

Though it’s common for businesses to have social media accounts, it’s important to market that your client’s have an active one too. Below are a few ways you can do that.

Marketing tactics for social media:

  • Place buttons on their website for their social media.
  • Do a social media promotion. If followers share a post and tag the business, they’re entered to win something.
  • Cross promote on each channel. For example, if the client has YouTube, put their other social channels in the description box.

Ad Management

Ads are fantastic way to boost a promotion or simply a social account. As the social media manager, it’s your job to determine what platforms are best to purchase ads for your client. You want to determine the budget, the overall goal of the ad(s) and where the ad will take the potential customer: landing page, blog, website or freebie.

Email Marketing

Some small businesses don’t have the budget to hire more than one person to do a variety of marketing tasks. Email marketing is another task many business have hired a social media virtual assistant to take on. Unlike social media, an email list is something a business owns and has full control over. You can also build this into a package that you offer a client and be able to charge more because of the added service you offer.

Blog Post Writing

In addition or in place of, you can also offer to write blog posts for your clients. Social media is a perfect tool to promote a client’s blog too, and they really work hand-in-hand. Blog posts are an excellent content marketing tool that not only shows your client’s expertise in their field, but gives them the opportunity to be highly searchable in search engines like Google.

All of these services are just some of the many services social media virtual assistants can offer. And obviously you don’t have to offer ALL of these to your clients either. This list is just some example to get you thinking about what you would offer for your social media management business.
