Can I let you in on a little secret? I had no idea what a virtual assistant was until I became one! Yep, it’s true. It wasn’t until the beginning of 2020, when I first started my online business that I discovered the true magic of being a virtual assistant. I had heard of general terms before, but the whole concept sounded elusive and a little far-fetched if you ask me. It’s funny, because to this day one of my most asked questions is, so what is a virtual assistant? What do you actually do as a virtual assistant?

WHAT A VIRTUAL ASSISTANT IS, AND IS NOT
Running your own virtual assistant business offers a wide range of technical and administrative services to business owners, remotely. If you’re a mom, travel enthusiast, or want to work wherever and whenever you want, a virtual assistant job is worth exploring. As a virtual assistant, you are a contractor that offers a select skillset, all completely remote! This means that you decide your pay rates, you decide what services you offer, you decide who you work with and you decide when you’re going to work and when you’re not.
If you’ve ever wanted to do what you love, be your own boss, set your own hours, and determine who you work with and how much you get paid, then being a virtual assistant is probably the job for you. As a virtual assistant, there is a tremendous amount of freedom. Freedom to call the shots, and truly build a business around a lifestyle that you love.
How I got started as a virtual assistant
Now that you know my secret, that I had zero plans of becoming a virtual assistant, let me give you a little backstory. I had heard the term virtual assistant before. I knew there were people out there who worked from home, but anytime I would search “how to work from home” or remote jobs, I mainly got a bunch of garbage. I would find articles saying to sign up for various websites and people will contact you if they are interested in your services. It all sounded very sketchy if you ask me.
It wasn’t until the beginning of 2020 when the world had shut down that I started hanging out in various Facebook groups that centered around business, marketing, female networking, and more. It was there that I quickly realized, whoa, these business owners need help. Their online businesses are booming, and the money and the clientele were locked in, but trying to find support for them was a lot like me typing into Google “how to work from home”, fruitless. It was right then and there that I started responding. The more I did it, the more natural it became. It was also then that I learned, oh so THIS is what a virtual assistant is!
WHY BEING A VIRTUAL ASSISTANT IS PURE MAGIC
Here’s the beauty of being a virtual assistant. It’s not that you get to be your own boss, work from home, set your schedule, and play by your rules. While those things are all major, the real reason I love being a virtual assistant is because being a VA means you can do anything that sets your heart on fire. If you love social media, you can be a social media VA. If you’re a podcast nerd and geek out over your favorite shows, podcasts may be your calling. If you’re a wizard of words, copywriters are in high demand! Maybe you love staying organized and the admin side of things. There’s a niche in that too.
You might be thinking to yourself, Amanda, this sounds too good to be true. It’s funny because when I was launching The Notoire Media House Course for the first time last year, I seriously had someone say that to me. I have to agree, it does sound too good to be true! Here’s the thing, being a VA and running your own profitable VA business is just like any other job. There will be things that you absolutely love and things that you could probably do without. I truly think that is accurate for pretty much everything in life. It’s kinda like being a mom. Overall, it’s seriously the greatest gift, being able to love and raise these tiny little humans who are half us and half the person we love most in this world. But are there days when bedtime could not come any sooner, I’d be lying if I didn’t say yes! That doesn’t mean we would trade in our title of mom for the world.
Being a VA is just like that. Are there days that are frustrating? Yes. But if I really think about it, they are usually just moments, not entire days, and in the grand scheme of things, I would still NEVER consider leaving it all behind to go back to working 40+ hours a week plus a commute for someone else.
Just the other day Josh and I were chatting about what we thought the next five years would hold. And as I tried to wrap my mind around the fact that in five years I would have a kindergartener and a toddler, it made me think about where I was five years ago. If you would have told me that I’d be doing exactly what I’m doing today, I’m not sure I would believe you. It’s amazing what you can accomplish in a short amount of time when you simply take action. It doesn’t have to be big giant leaps and bounds, but tiny steps in the right direction. That’s part of why I started this podcast.
